About the workshop
This workshop will enable participants to have a broader understanding of autism spectrum disorder: including its characteristics and behaviors, the diagnostic process, current methods of treatment, the environmental and academic needs of children and adolescents on the spectrum, how autism affects families, and what adolescents on the spectrum need in order to transition into adulthood.
Workshop Objectives:
- Define autism spectrum disorder.
- Identify autism spectrum disorder characteristics and behaviors.
- Discuss the steps in the diagnostic process.
- Examine current methods of treatment.
- Identify environmental needs of children ad adolescents on the spectrum.
- Examine how children and adolescents on the spectrum learn best.
- Share hands-on strategies for working with children and adolescents on the spectrum.
- Discuss how families are affected by autism spectrum disorder.
- Identify what school systems need to do to provide more positive learning environments for children and adolescents on the spectrum.
- Discuss ways to prepare adolescents on the spectrum for transitioning into adulthood.

About the presenter
Diane Davis, MA , specializes in training educators, adult students, parents and social service professionals in a variety of areas including autism spectrum disorders. She has worked as a school counselor in both urban and rural school districts, an in-home crisis counselor for the State of Washington, a drug/alcohol counselor in two adolescent inpatient treatment facilities, a statewide trainer for Head Start and the Dept. of Social and Health Services, and as adjunct faculty at community colleges and for Western Washington University for over 20 years. She is also the author of four books, all dealing with child and family issues.
