Certificate Program in Adoption and Foster Care Therapy

Sponsored by Northwest Adoption Exchange and Cascadia Training

The Foster Care and Adoption Therapy certificate program, sponsored by the Northwest Adoption Exchange and Cascadia Training, will help you develop the clinical skills necessary to treat the mental health problems of children and families involved with foster care and adoption.

Now in its fifth year, the certificate program was one of the first of its kind in the country and continues to serve as a model today

Focused on your goals

A total of 72 hours of coursework is required to complete the certificate program: 36 hours of core curriculum, 6 hours of adoption-specific ethics and 30 hours of elective classes. Our curriculum offers the latest information on techniques and trends. Electives, chosen to reinforce your personal interests and professional goals, are available through several community educational programs and meet all CEU requirements. Your training will enable you to practice at both the individual and family levels.

Flexible program

You can enter the certificate program at any time during the year, with up to two years to complete your training. We will track your progress auto-matically and issue your certificate when you have completed the required 72 hours of coursework.

Top instructors

Our classes are taught by local and national professionals who are experts in this growing field. Instructors employ a range of educational tools for maximum impact: lectures, assigned readings, group discussions, demonstrations and videos.

Our small class size allows you to forge connections with fellow students and instructors alike, providing a forum for professional cama-raderie, networking and referrals – even after you leave the program.

Program cost

Participants pay a fee for each class, due at the time of enrollment. A one-time administrative fee of $100.00 is also required.

As an added bonus

Once you complete the certificate program, you will be registered with the Washington State Adoption Support Program. This list is shared with adoptive families and case workers statewide who request therapy resources.

Families also have access to the list through the Northwest Adoption Exchange and other adoption resource centers.

Adoption has radically changed.  The number of U.S. foster children adopted into families is at 50,000 adoptions per year-50% higher than 5 years ago.  The average age of these children at the time of adoption: 6 years old.  The good news is that the majority of these children are doing well.  The bad news is that the children have twice the rate of traumatic stress as Vietnam Veterans.  The rate of international adoption has tripled in the last 15 years, including a majority of children who have been in orphanage care.  Half of the children adopted after as little as 8 months in an orphanage will be referred for social skills groups.  Are we ready to meet their needs?

Therapists and caseworkers who are helping families are finding that they need enhanced skills to help children and their famlies, and to meet the standards of Best Practice.  This core curriculum is designed to equip professionals to meet challenges that chilren and families are struggling to overcome.  The methods are practical and include applications of brain research and evidence-based practices.
