Ethics and Law for Clinical Supervisors

This ethics training is designed specifically for clinical supervisors and will satisfy the ethics requirement for licensure renewal.  Our trainers are experts in clinical supervision (Lisa Erickson) and mental health law (Bob Smith).  Learn about legal and ethical trends that impact the field of clinical supervision.  Get an update on new legislation and WAC revisions, and get ideas for how to handle challenging situations including boundary violations, all while earning the required ethics CEUs.  

Participants will: 

Learn the legal differences between clinical supervision and case consultation.

Become familiar with the new mandatory reporting requirements.
 
Learn about the new sexual misconduct WAC.

Examine recommended paperwork forms and documentation.

Learn strategies for minimizing your risk while increasing your enjoyment of clinical supervision.

Examine the conflicts that can arise between agency pressures and best practices in clinical supervision.

 

This workshop meets the Ethics and Law requirement and also satisfies 6 of the 15 credits needed to become an approved supervisor.

About the presenter

Lisa Erickson, MS, LMHC , has been a psychotherapist, clinical supervisor and trainer for over 30 years.  She has been very active at state and local levels on issues related to mental health service delivery.  She has taught psychotherapy at the graduate level for over 20 years and is a seasoned trainer of other clinicians.  Lisa began training others in providing clinical supervision in the early 90’s and for the last five years has been training clinicians to become “approved supervisors” in keeping with Washington state guidelines.  She is a past president of the Washington Mental Health Counselors Association and the Seattle Counselors Association.  Lisa has a full time practice in Seattle where she works with adult clients, and provides clinical supervision and consultation.  She maintains an active teaching and training schedule as well. She graduated from the University of Kansas with a M.S. Degree in Counseling Psychology

Robert E. Smith, Attorney at Law
, is of counsel with the Mercer Island, Washington law firm of Lybeck Murphy, LLP. He holds two degrees from the University of Washington, an undergraduate degree in psychology and a graduate law degree. 

Many of his clients, including both individual practitioners and facilities, provide behavioral health care services.  In addition to providing transactional business services, Mr. Smith deals daily with privacy and security issues.  During the past few years, attorneys have begun using him as a consultant as to matters involving compulsory process and other methods of information access.

Mr. Smith’s practice also includes general business law, estate administration and estate planning
