About the workshop
Many adopted children are "multiple impacted" and seriously disturbed. Their complex histories often include: early lives affected by prenatal exposure to drugs and/or alcohol; childhood's marked by neglect and deprivation; complex trauma such as varied, chronic child physical and sexual abuse; exposure to domestic violence; separation from or loss of significant others; and/or multiple out-of-home placements. This workshop will address the adoptive parenting issues related to multiple impacts and complex histories. It will focus on how to get to the bottom of why children behave or misbehave as they do and how to approach the problems.
This workshop will show how children with complex histories can learn from subsequent, nurturing relationships which offer reliable and responsive caregiving and model, teach, and reward acceptable, pro-social behaviors in place of maladaptive conduct.
Topics Covered:
*Making sense of mystifying behavior problems.
*Understanding "Type D" attachment style.
*Comprehending the nature of relational healing.
*Designing parenting interventions that are practical.
