Minding the Adolescent Brain:  Aligning Practice and Development

Julie M. Rosenzweig, Ph.D, LCSW

About the workshop

Vulnerable and opportunistic---the highly adaptive adolescent brain prepares itself to function in the adult world.  Developmental imperatives that unfold during the transition to adulthood lead adolescents to seek out experiences through relationships, romance, and risk-taking.  The pliable neural pathways record the experiences, noting with special emphasis those most rewarding.  Arriving at adolescence with a trauma history further complicates the negotiation of developmental tasks.  Intrusive memories, impaired attachment skills, and somatic reminders may misdirect the adolescent's thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.  Neuroscience challenges practitioners to realign their expectaions and interventions with the developing adolescent brain in mind.  This workshop provides an overview of brain structure and function, brain development specific during adolescence; effects of trauma on the brain and mind; and implications for practice.
