About the workshop
It is believed that 90% of communication occurs on a nonverbal physiologic level. If this is true, then the implications for work with adopted and attachment challenged children just became more challenging. The development of a child is profoundly shaped and influenced by experience. Experiences shape and influence the early wiring of the brain and body system which in turn influences all aspects of emotional, social, cognitive and physiologic functioning. The experience of traumatic stress can create impairment within a child's body mind system with the capacity for influence throughout the lifespan. Such experiences typically are diagnosed in children as reactive attachment disorder, bi-polar, attention-deficit, oppositional-defiant, and post-traumatic stress disorder, to name a few. Parents for years have struggled to parent such children utilizing a wide range of traditional therapies and parenting techniques with little to no impact.
Research is now beginning to recognize that there is more to this mysterious treatment puzzle than once believed. The family system, which hass essentially been ignored by traditional therapists outside the marriage and family therapy context is now taking on a new and more meaningful role. It is proven that traumatic stress can be passed down through the generations, literally transforming cellular expression.
This intensive workshop will closely examine the latest neuroscientific findings with regards to the brain, creating a clear understanding for how trauma within any family member can potentially create traumatic experiences for all members of the family, making it essential that the entire family participate in the successful treatment of difficult and oftentimes attachment challenged children.
