This didactic, experiential and interactive 2-day, 15 hour workshop on Clinical Supervision meets the requirements for becoming an approved supervisor.  The workshop will start with the basics, proceed through clinical skills and finish with the advanced skills needed to become an experienced supervisor. 

 Attendees will be able to:

  • Distinguish between supervision, consultation and teaching
  • Describe the major models of supervision currently being used
  • Enumerate the various legal and ethical challenges of supervision
  • Understand the responsibilities involved for both the supervisor and supervisee
  • Develop a contract with a supervisee, define parameters and expectations and keep appropriate records for supervision
  • Utilize evaluation methods as appropriate
  • Demonstrate effective ways to structure the initial contact with supervisee
  • List and model techniques that will increase the effectiveness of the supervision process
  • Identify ways to deal with "difficult" supervisees
  • Understand the process of the supervisory relationship
  • Identify the developmental stages of the supervisee, and know how to most effectively match supervisor style to the developmental stage of the supervisee
  • Conduct an evaluation of a supervisee
  • Develop a personal model for clinical supervision
  • Refine skills in giving feedback to supervisees
  • Refine skills and increase confidence in dealing constructively with difficult supervisees

There will be time for practice with feedback and a chance for people to address their supervision questions and challenges.

Cascadia Training is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements.  The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program.

Yvonne Owen, PhD

Yvonne Owen, PhD, is a clinical psychologist retired from Seattle University after about 30 years. She received her B.S. degree in Psychology from the University of Washington in 1967 and a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Washington in 1978.  Dr. Owen has provided clinical supervision to Master's level students for over 30 years.  She also leads consultation groups and provides supervision for pre-licensure professionals.  She developed the diagnosis and assessment class for master's students in the mental health counseling program, and has taught this course since the manual in use was the DSM-II: she has evolved with the course in her knowledge and experience.

Ms. Owen has a new title, Professor Emerita. She maintains a private practice in Seattle and has been teaching classes for Cascadia Training for over 10 years.  Yvonne is known for her inviting, engaging and humorous style.
